Bioelectric music, the sounds heard follow the electrical activity of the organism in real time. By far the best way to achieve this is to amplify the action potentials generated by the plant or fungus itself. Action potentials are sharp voltage spikes generated by the plant or fungus itself in response to environmental changes or as processes of the organism. Mushroom sounds together with slowly evolving drones and live video – this is what you will experience at the sound performance of the duo Michael Prime and Susana López aka Susan Drone. For more than 30 years, Michael Allen Z Prime has been making music with plants and fungi. His albums: ‚L-Fields‘, ‚One Hour As Peyote‘, and ‚Borneo‘, were the first to be made using the bioelectrical fields of plants and fungi as a sound source. All living things have a bioelectrical field, which fluctuates constantly, according to the state of the organism. Michael makes the fluctuations in the bioelectrical field audible by first amplifying these small voltages, then using the amplified voltage to control an oscillator. The fluctuations in pitch and rhythm that you hear directly follow the fluctuations of the bioelectrical field. Michael Allen Z Prime is a scientist, ecologist and sound artist, known for his bioelectric music with plants and fungi. Susana López aka Susan Drone is an interdisciplinary artist, presenting compositions, audiovisual installations and immersive concerts.
